Culture Club
I love Southwest Airlines. I always have and I always will. Does anyone remember the $29 Fun Flights? That was back in the early to mid 1990’s and that was when I was introduced to travel! Sure, it was just to Dallas or San Antonio but it might as well been Paris as far as I was concerned. My son, Ronnie, was the ultimate traveling partner. We had exciting adventures and always had a blast. Single motherhood and a microscopic bank account didn’t seem so bad with Southwest.
The most impressive part of Southwest Airlines is their company culture…a culture that they have enthusiastically maintained for 40 years! Much of the culture can be attributed to co-founder and long-time CEO Herb Kelleher. Like many young, growing companies, Southwest’s culture was an extension of its original leaders — in this case, Mr. Kelleher.
Current CEO Gary Kelly admits that “the Southwest Culture has thrived, but it hasn’t been easy.” He adds that the culture’s longevity “has been both our biggest accomplishment and our most significant challenge.”
In the book, “Nuts! Southwest Airlines Crazy Recipe for Business and Personal Success,” there are 13 dominant values shared that drive Southwest’s corporate character and culture:
1. Profitability
2. Low Cost
3. Family
4. Fun
5. Love
6. Hard Work
7. Individuality
8. Ownership
9. Legendary Service
10. Egalitarianism (Ultimate fight for the common person)
11. Common Sense/Good Judgment
12. Simplicity
13. Altruism (The employees serve through countless acts of goodwill)
