I'm OK, You're OK
Today, I was visiting with a friend of a friend who is from Boston. Let’s get specific…it’s my good friend (and Director of Career Services) Linda’s friend, Ernie. “Welcome to Oklahoma,” I say…as I always do when I greet a new visitor! “So…have you ever been to our fine state?” Nine times out of ten the answer is “I’ve driven through” and Ernie’s response was no different! Pity! I mean…with our vast shoreline, Garth Brooks, Carrie Underwood, home of 20 foot Jesus, number of fast food restaurants per capita, and the best talk radio host in America (Pat Campbell); they have no idea what they are missing!
As a 4th generation Oklahoman, I am very proud of our beautiful state! Okies are the nicest and the most generous people on the planet! Tulsa, in particular, is awesome and has been very gracious to me when I started my business nearly 16 years ago.
…you know you are from Oklahoma when…
You can “just tell” a tornado is coming
You know that Miami, Oklahoma and Miami, Florida are pronounced VERY different
You wear a thong with your Depends (Thank you, Mom, for this one)
You know, for a fact, that people from Arkansas are inbred
The Tulsa State Fair is your family vacation
All food taste better with Ranch
City coucilors belong in The Tulsa Zoo
You can properly pronounce Kiowa, Muskogee, Nowata, Pushmataha, Pottawatomie, Sapulpa, and Ouachita
Little Smokies, deviled eggs and Velveeta and Rotel are something you serve only for special occasions
You’ve ever had to switch from “heat” to “A/C” in the same day
Frying a turkey is a right of passage
You finally acknowledge that the Golden Driller is Tulsa’s biggest tourist attraction
You ignore the fact that the owners of the Tulsa World are extreme liberals because you like to read the food, movie and entertainment sections
You continue to make bets in bars that Tulsa invented the hamburger
You burn your yard versus mowing
You financed your tattoo
Jack Daniels makes your list of most admired people
and everyone has a neighbor or someone they know with a car on blocks in the front yard!
A read an interesting history of the hamburger a few years ago. I was shocked to learn that Weber’s actually makes a decent claim on inventing the hamburger. I believe, though, that the book’s author settled on Wichita and White Castle.
Being from Boston – I also know that folks (a word I learned and started using upon my relocation) from OK are ok! These sure signs of being okie-made, made me realize just how unapologetically simple life is here in Green Country (in Boston, this is another term for the Irish areas of Southie), and that I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else!
Well said by a true Oklahoman!
