Floss Your Way to Business Success
Don’t believe me? Doubting a former dental assistant may not be a wise move! To some, this topic may sound ridiculous, but observing professionals over the years…first, from a dental assistant’s perspective and now, over the past 20 years, as a business owner, I can share this with confidence.
For the record, this has nothing to do with not-so-white teeth, crooked teeth, gaps in teeth, crowded teeth…all of those tooth styles are attractive if they are clean and are surrounded by healthy gum tissue.
I can say with certainty that there is a direct relationship between healthy oral hygiene and career optimization.
The Dirty Truth
Half of American adults have periodontal disease. The CDC estimates that 47.2 percent, or 64.7 million American adults, have mild, moderate or severe periodontitis, the more advanced form of periodontal disease.
What this means to you? You can advance over 50% of your co-workers if you just floss.
Periodontitis always begins with inflammation of the gums, known as gingivitis. Do you have or do you know someone with HOT PINK gum tissue? That’s not healthy!!! Healthy gum tissue is very light pink! Hot Pink means smelly bacteria.
What this means to you? Don’t stand too close to others, please! You always feel like there is an itch that you cannot scratch. On the rare occasion that you do floss, you bleed. Your gums are unnatural in color and I’m 100% sure you have bad breath.
Periodontal disease is associated with other chronic inflammatory diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
What this means to you? You are not only going to lose your teeth, your overall health is in jeopardy.
For a person to have periodontal disease, he or she must have at least one periodontal site with 3 millimeters or more of attachment loss and 4 millimeters or more of pocket depth. Do you know what gets in the pockets? Bacterial toxins which eventually break down the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place. So basically, dying flesh and tissue.
What this means to you? BAD Breath (Rotting bacteria in your mouth) is the worst social and business decision you will make in your life.
Do yourself and your career a favor….FLOSS!
Teresa, what a great and sobering article. I definitely did not take flossing that seriously. Based on the fact that not flossing means rotting bacteria is in my mouth and an increase in bad health I am taking flossing more seriously. And hey using Plackers makes it much easier.
